HOW CAN I HELP?
![]() | Phosphorus
(P) is a chemical element that occurs naturally in soil, as well
as human and animal waste. It is also a common ingredient in many
household cleaning products and fertilizers. Too much phosphorus
can be dangerous to water environments because it increases plant
and algae growth. |
![]() | Fats, Oils and Grease, also known as FOG, can be harmful to the environment. If poured down the drain, FOG sticks to the inside of the sewer lines. Over time, this grease builds up and blocks the sewer system causing raw sewage overflows and backups. |
Medications that are unwanted and expired may pose
a risk to human health and the environment if disposed of improperly.
Traditionally, households disposed of them by flushing or pouring
then down the drain. However, because wastewater treatment systems
cannot fully treat or remove the medicines, trace amounts may end
up in streams, lakes and rivers. | |
| Pet waste is not something people typically think of as pollution, but unscooped waste is washed by rain into our lakes, streams and oceans, causing an unnaturally high levels of fecal coliform bacteria. |
