Dig Greenville gives community opportunity to help Name the Drill

Greenville, S.C. (November 27, 2017) – The drill that will bore a tunnel underneath downtown Greenville has a path, a timeline and even a design for the face. It’s just missing a name, and Renewable Water Resources (ReWa) is inviting the community to help name the drill in a contest being held this holiday season.

Community members are invited to submit their name ideas during the contest that will launch during Dig Greenville’s BIG Skate Day at Ice on Main on Saturday, December 2. The contest will run through Saturday, December 9on Dig Greenville’s Facebook page. ReWa staff members will also be onsite at Ice on Main to share information about Dig Greenville and introduce the drill design. A contest winner will be chosen on Friday, December 15, and the winner will receive recognition and a ReWa prize pack.

The yet-to-be-named drill is a cartoon rendering of the machine that will be used to bore the mile-long tunnel 100 feet below ground for ReWa’sDig Greenville wastewater conveyance improvement project. The cartoon drill will serve as an education and outreach mascot for the duration of the Dig Greenville project, encouraging residents to learn about the updates and improvements to Greenville’s infrastructure happening beneath their feet.

The drill’s friendly design was also determined through a contest, held in partnership with Greenville Health System over the summer. Children were invited to design the face of the drill, and three winners were chosen out of over 70submissions. The resulting drill is a combination of all of the winners’ designs.

“We are excited to involve the community in planning for Dig Greenville through the Name the Drill contest because we want everyone to feel engaged with this significant project,” said Ashley Rhinehart, Public Relations Coordinator for ReWa. “We are designing the future of Greenville’s infrastructure, and we want to use this drill to teach the community about our project in a fun way.”

Construction on the Dig Greenville project is scheduled to begin in early 2018. For more information, visit www.rewaonline.org/diggreenville, and follow the project updates on Facebook and Twitter.
