The spotted salamander was designated as the State Amphibian in 1999 and is the only amphibian indigenous to the whole state. The “For The Love of Water” mural on our campus celebrates both the salamander’s vital role in local ecosystems and ReWa’s ongoing commitment to water quality. The spotted salamander can be recognized by its bright yellow spots.
FUN FACT: Blank Canvas Mural Co. visited the Greenville Zoo to draw inspiration for the mural and meet Dottie, Greenville’s very own spotted salamander.
Fun facts about the spotted salamander (Ambystoma maculatum):
Eggs are laid underwater and take 4-7 weeks to hatch.
Range in size from 5.5-9 inches in length.
The presence of salamanders in an area can indicate that the water is clean and the ecosystem is healthy.
Spend most of their lives hidden under rocks or logs, most commonly found in moist, low-lying forests near floodplains (like the habitat we have here).
Named the official state amphibian in 1999!
Can live up to 20 years in the wild, making them one of the longest-living amphibians!

Special Tip:
Admire me from a distance! My skin is very sensitive, and my slimy coating is
important for my health—touching me could harm both of us.
