Our Program

ReWa has partnered with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources since 2017 to recycle oyster shells through SCDNR’s South Carolina Oyster Recycling and Enhancement Program (SCORE).

The community is invited to recycle oyster shells through ReWa’s bin near the intersection of Mauldin and Wenwood roads. All shells collected in the bin are taken to South Carolina’s coast to build oyster reefs that reduce erosion, provide habitats for aquatic life and produce more oysters. One adult oyster can filter up to 50 gallons of water a day.

In 2024, ReWa collected 68,540 pounds of oyster shells.

Don't dump oyster shells in the trash! Look for the big blue "Shuck'em In" sign on Mauldin Road and recycle those shells.

Do’s and don’ts when recycling oyster shells

  • Just leave shells.
  • Remove shells from bags and containers.
  • Ensure that napkins, condiment cups, wrappers from crackers, utensils and other trash are not deposited with shells.
  • Do not remove shells from the bin. All shells left in the bin become property of the state. Shell removal is prohibited.
